Day 2: Kingfisher Park - Mangrove Kayaking & Bangi-Bangi Hunting

Before I went out of my comfort zone, I posted a few goals just to have something to look forward to (pinressure ang sarili? hahah!). This mangrove kayaking activity is one of them since I haven't tried it.. EVER.

Anyway, this is also a part of my Solo Trip in Coron series..

We left Virgin Forest right after Anak ni Zuma showed up. hahah! Since August is a rainy season and it's when these creatures normally roam around, I decided not to go farther. I should not blame it to someone (kay Airphil ko siya isisisi dahil hindi sila nagsi-seat sale ng summer. hmp!) Past 12 noon when we were able to reach the exit point. Kuya driver was there waiting for us.

What I really want to experience in KP is to have a bamboo-cooked meals. I saw it in their FB account kaya super excited ako. Unfortunately, they temporarily discontinued the offer since marami daw langaw at kutong lupa sa forest. Go! They said they would reconsider it after I wrote them a letter that this what makes KP unique. Matutupad nito ang pangarap kong maging girl scout. Hahaha!

Hanggang sa muli Bamboo! Pasasaan ba't makakain din kita.. (Source)
I thought I would have my lunch in Kubo sa Dagat. Unfortunately, it's under construction when I was there so they drove me to Kubo sa Lupa na lang daw. I learned it was actually a rest house of one of the owners of KP. Inabutan namin si kuya guard. Bugnot na bugnot na. Hahaha! Sayang wala akong napicturan dun. Sensiya na gutom lang.

Did I mention ako lang ang bisita that day? I was surprised to see kung ano ang hinain ni ate Cook for me. Yumyum! Actually I'm allergic to sea foods. I did not tell them intentionally even if they asked me before upon confirmation on this trip. Masarap ang bawal. hahahah!

Since hindi ko nga siya kayang kainin at ayoko rin na pinapanood habang kumakain (another haciendera moment. lol!), sabi ko saluhan na nila ako. Kuya Enzo did. He told me this was just the second time he was invited to have a lunch kasama ang guest kaya natutuwa siya. Minsan kasi daw, they're just eating the left overs of the guests kasi nga hindi sila sinasalo. Nakakalungkot. I hope this would not happen again. Guest lang tayo ok? Tao din sila.

Enzo: Minsan mam sa Canaderia kami kumakain..
Me: Canaderia? Ano yun? Baka Carinderia! hahaha!
Enzo: Hahah!

Nagulat si Enzo when he saw me na nagkakamay.

We proceeded on the sea side right after we took our lunch. Mangrove Kayaking na!

Kayak Duo!
Actually, mag ka-kanya kanya sana kami. Good thing I insisted to use yung pang dalawang tao.. pwede akong tamarin magsagwan. hahaha! It's perfect to do this after lunch since start pa lang yun ng pag low tide.

Get ready to be ONE with nature!

Or anaconda para mas cute. Feeling JLO ganun.. hihihi!

Bangi-bangi usually comes out on muddy soil or sa lupa na naka submerge sa water at nakikita lang pag nag low tide na. Sometimes they're on the Mangrove itself.

Pag SLR kasi, matatakot kang i-risk at hindi mo makukunan ang naggagandahang mangrove channels like this. Oha!

I have no idea kung ano ang puno'ng ito.. Isn't it luvleh?

Puzzle Fruit! (Stay tuned. I'll show you on the next post why it's called such.

Ms. Menchu said, I might need to use binoculars to see bangi-bangi up close because their very sensitive to human movements. Enzo maneuver it on one spot where we can dock.

Suddenly, we saw cute little bangi-bangi na isa isa ngang lumalabas sa lungga. (walang pakealaman blog ko to no! hahaha!)

Enzo thought of a way to capture them. Ramdam na ramdam ko ang kasabihang "Patience is a virtue". You have to remember the spot where you have seen them last. That's also where they will come out. Get yourself ready and your cam as well. If you need to set it on Macro mode then do so.. Dapa kung dapa sa lupa! hahaha! Oo sa kainitan ng araw. After a minute or two, na halos walang hingahan at walang kaluskos na nagaganap, you'll be amazed to see them right infront of you. I can't help but smile lalo na nung iba't ibang kulay ang naglabasan. I felt I was a kid na nakakita ng bagong laruan. hihihi!

Check these out guys.. ito ang kinahinatnan ng pinaghirapan ko.

Meet Mr. Crab
Bangi bangi is a crab with a unique claw dahil bukod sa mag-isa lang ito, it's huge para sa maliit na katawan na meron siya. Hmm.. another new discovery I had. hihihi! I don't know if this is new to my readers, siguro marami ng nakaka-alam and they're laughing at me now dahil parang inosente ako sa ganyan. Hahah!

Up close!

mukang notorious na bangi bangi. Nangingitim! hahaha!

This is our favorite. It was indeed beautiful.

Captured! hihihi! Hahaha! Pinakawalan din niya.

Can you count how many bangi-bangi are there?

I hope hindi talaga ma-spoil ang lugar na to. Truly.. an amazing experience awaits. Two thumbs up for the guys behind Kingfisher Park. I highly recommend this to everyone.

hello dagat! Goodbye Sapa!

Make Kingfisher Park as part of your itinerary in Coron. You'll love it I promise. I never knew Coron has this "biodiversity haven". Puro kasi island hopping yung mga activities namin dun before. Oh well, Coron is known for it but trying other activities won't hurt. I learned a lot. I found new friends and I had this amazing experience. Again, it may seem sponsored, pero I'll spread the word still. Visit their site website at www.kingfisherpark.com. I rarely recommends at madalas may reklamo ako. Pero sa KP, I have no bad words to say. Inalagaan nila akong mabuti and the place exceeded my expectations. Hindi ko talaga to makakalimutan.

Experience total relaxation in Kubo sa Dagat... up next na yan!

Day 2: Kingfisher Park - Virgin Forest: Hiking 101 (lol!)

My mind was set that this day I would die of exhaustion because of my scheduled trek to several mountains of Kingfisher Park in Coron. (And I really don't consider it as a park now. Hahaha!) Recap recap! I was able to climb up Malbato Church and rewarded by a great view. Tapos narin ang tupi portion ng jogging pants going to Peminta's Cascading Water. Moving on...

After my guide, Enzo, ate almost half of my Gardenia Bread (lol!), we left and went on to our next destination. Ariba na agad si manong driver.

Enzo said next na daw yung Dam. As far as I remember, I haven't seen any Dam like on their website and it's not included on my itinerary as well so I feel like, he's just touring me around to where he wants to which added up to my excitement (well because I don't know what to expect since it will be my first time to see it literally. What were you thinking huh?! hahaha!)

After a while, kuya driver stopped. He mentioned a Cuyunin word (local dialect of Coron and other parts of Palawan which originated from Cuyo island). I hate that I'm suffering from memory gap most of the time so I forgot the exact word. Basta may word na 'libing'. Malilibing daw yung tricycle sa putik so we have to walk few meters than the usual. They're both looking at me. Inaantay siguro reaction ko.

Me: Ge lang. Naintindihan ko po yun mga kuya. heheh!
Enzo: Ah.. ok... o nga naman. Salamat sa root word na 'libing' no? (lol!)
Me: Uy English yun kuya! Palakpakan mo ang sarili mo. hahaha! (I was referring to the word 'root word' that he mentioned. Sabi niya kasi he's having a hard time speaking the language lalo na pag foreigner ang guest niya.)
Me: Ay! May galit?! may galit?! hahah!

Napa-isip ako at napabilib sa sinabi niya. Simple lang pero tumatak sakin. Amazing kid.

Try it.lol!

Putik trail. lol!
After we reached a certain spot, I started clicking my cam on the lake. I've seen a lot of birds flying around it. Big ones. Unfortunately my point and shoot cam wasn't good enough to capture it.

Me: Uhmm.. malayo pa ba yung Dam?
Enzo: Dam? Ay ito na yun mam! hahaha! Kaya nga hindi ako umiimik. Titingnan ko reaction mo. Hindi ka nagandahan?
Me: (pahiya) ay sorry naman..

Enzo and Kuya driver were laughing on the side. lol! It's nice. It's just that I was expecting a splashing water from it like what the usual dam looks like.

Wala sa ichura ng Dam diba? Forgive me.. hahah!

Three of us sat for a while on a nearby tree. I didn't think it was a dam. Just a reservoir. Imbak kumbaga para sa patubig sa palayan. Ganun lang siguro talaga ang tawag nila. In my previous entry - Peminta Falls, Ms. Menchu, one of the owners of this huge park, corrected me that it was just a cascading water and not Falls. Locals there just consider it a falls because it has a drop. Hihihi!

After naming mag-chismisan, Enzo said we should move on. Great isn't it?

Naks! Kuya Kim!? hahah!

Praning mode conversation habang patawid sa isa sa "MGA" sapa..
Me: Shit kuya may gumagalaaaaw! Sandaliiii laaaang!!
Enzo: Ah yun ba........hmmm
Enzo: ...buwaya lang yun.
Me: Waaaah! Puteeeeek! Wag kang ganyan kuya! tatakbuhan talaga kita!
Enzo: Joooooooooke! hahahahah!

Balete Tree. Scary as ever..

Mahusay! Siya na bida. Now I know kung bakit siya kinatatakutan. hahahah!

Adik talaga. Takutin ba ko?! hahahah!

Wala pang isang oras, we saw a small falls. It's not the usual falls where you can take a dip. Wala siyang pool. Wala lang. Babagsak lang siya basta sa baba. Kailangan ko pang tabuin.. hahah! Actually since it's a natural spring water it's safe to drink from it. Mahina ang sikmura ko sa ganyan kaya I prefer not to. Baka kung san ako abutan e. Mahirap na. hahaha!

When we we're about to leave.. sa di inaasahang pangyayari, Kuya Enzo saw a snake. In my heart, I really wanted to go on pero sumuot ang dyaskeng snake sa dadaanan namin. Valentina? lol!

Me: Pano kuya pag nakagat tayo ng ahas. Alam mo ba mag first aid?
Me: Pano pag ikaw ang unang nakagat? Hindi kita kayang ibaba ha. Iiwan talaga kita diyan. Ayokong magbuhat umayos ka! hahaha!
Enzo: Hahah!

With this age, I felt I know nothing as compared to him. Sabi niya kahit first time niyang umakyat sa isang bundok kayang kaya niyang bumalik.
Me: Pano?
Enzo: Hindi no. hahaha!
Me: Ah ok.. As if naman lagi akong susuot sa kagubatan. hahah!

Salamat bata! Ang dami kong natutunan sayo. We saw a few kingfisher birds. Pero they're very sensitive sa movements. KP offers Bird Watching activities. Perfect activity for Photographers kasi sobrang ganda ng mga species dun. Check out their website to know more about it. As of 2008, 73 kinds were spotted. Kuya Enzo believe there were a lot more. Marami pa siyang nakikita na hindi recorded. Chaka hello! Anong taon na ngayon. hahaha! Contact Mr. Amby Reyes 09173298542 or email Ms. Menchu kingfisherbiodiversitypark@yahoo.com if you're interested.

Next na ang Mangrove kayaking ko... yey! Excited na ko ikwento..

Hindi ko alam kung ano to.. Nakita ko lang basta.

This is a part of my solo travel series in Coron. Please check out my previous posts..

Day 2: Kingfisher Park Tour (Malbato Church & Peminta Falls)

I define Coron as a one huge Paradise. Upon my first visit last October of 2010, we allotted 4 days to tour the whole place. I must say I already marked almost all of the touristy spots there like Banana Island, Malcapuya Island, Calumboyan island, Banol island, Kayangan, Siete Picados, Culion (and the list goes on. mahihiya ang listahan ng bumbay). However, after my experience at the park, I realized hindi pa pala kumpleto ang pagkahaba habang listahan ko. You'll never ran out of places to visit coz Coron has a lot more to offer. I stumbled upon off the beaten path in Coron on the net just few days before my flight. It's Kingfisher Park located at Malbato which is 45 minutes away from the town proper by land. Pictures on their website and FB page were enough to make me say Yes to Kingfisher. Check these out..

Tempting isn't it? Perfect for my Solo Getaway. I immediately texted the numbers (yes..with the S) posted on their website. Initially, Mae of Coron Galeri, an official agent of KP, replied and said the usual rate is P1,500.00 per person  which includes lunch, park tour (Lunes Santo or Virgin Forest or Kaluluwang falls), mangrove kayaking and service vice versa to and from Coron Town Proper and KP. Upon checking, she said there would be no group joining me that day (define S-O-L-O) so I will be charged P3000.00. That didn't make me feel good. I suddenly backed out since I can't afford to pay that much. Lungkot na lungot ako ate charo. =(

Come next day, I opened my FB and there's this one message from a stranger saying..

Hello Maricar,
Were you the one who send a text to Kingfisher Park. We really couldn't understand what you mean. Are you coordinating with Al from Coron Galeri or he told you to contact us? Please let me know and I can work with you on your trip to KP.

Thanks,

Menchu (Kingfisher Park).
Nabuhayan ako ng dugo talaga. I learned later on that she was one of the owners of the park. If you try to search my name on FB, mahihilo ka talaga kakahanap dahil marami akong kapangalan kaya naman saludo ako sa kanya. Bravo! You found me!

To make the story short, natuloy ang naudlot kong pangarap because of her. She was the one who arranged my trip and gave it to me for 1,500.00 for "trek and kayak till I drop". By the way, she was based in the US so I was not able to meet her personally.

Upon confirmation of my trip, she included the list of what to expect but this strange paragraph somehow is worth sharing. hihihih!
"..Watch out where you are walking for snakes/wildlife.  More should be out during the rainy season. I hope you don't encounter a snake.  I usually freak out whenever I see one but the guides are good on spotting them. "
Remember Prony? the largest python in Bohol? Ayoko na siyang makita o kahit sinong kalahi niya. hahaha! Scary.. specially those were untouched by humans and are freely roaming around the forest. That's the reason kung bakit tinago ko to from my parents. Medyo delikado. I'm the only girl in the family and I know they won't be allowing me pag nalaman nila. hihihih!

And the story goes like this..

Kuya Jason, my boatman friend I was telling from previous post, already replied the next day while I was waiting for my service going to kingfisher park. As a recap, I tried to pull a prank on him by telling him na friend ko ang magiging guest niya the next day kaya ingatan niya at bigyan niya ng discount. To give him a hint, I texted about the fine weather and that he's giving me the wrong info kasi sabi niya maulan daw. To my frustration, mukang hindi niya na-gets. hahah! So nagtext ulit ako "Hi kuya! mukang maganda na nga ang panahon ngayon no? brown-out nga lang e. tsk!". Kung hindi ba naman niya mahulaan yan. Ewan ko na lang. Pinaglololoko ko daw siya. hahaha! We promised to see each other after my park tour. Tinakot?! lol! Before you think of anything else, he's not single and my mom knows him ok?

I was picked up at around past 8:00am by Kuya Lorenzo, Enzo for short daw sabi niya (biglang naging sosyal ang dating). He introduced himself na siya daw ang tour guide ko for that whole day. Actually I was supposed to be picked up at 7:30am pero uber late na siya. Someone called while we were on our way, if I'm not mistaken, it was his boss scolding him. hihihi! Nahiya naman ako kasi ako ang nagsumbong (well, if you consider pagsusumbong ang pagsasabi ng 'Sir, wala pa rin po ata yung guide ko. Sabi nyo po kasi padating na siya. Medyo kanina pa ko nag-aantay'. Owkei simulan na natin ang tour...

And the fun started..

Malbato Church

The trip took about 5 minutes from the signage of KP. You need to take a few steps to get there. Sorry I forgot to count. hihihi! Kuya Enzo said "Whew! hindi pa man tayo nakakarating, penetensiya na inaabot ng mga tao dahil sa hagdan na to!" lol! Ang kulit niya grabe.

Medyo parusa nga siya.. but you'll be rewarded by a great view at the top

A closer look... Isa isang dinikit yan. Ang galing diba?

Altar (and there's no one inside)

It's worth the climb isn't it?

Breath-taking view welcomed me

After saying a little prayer, I decided to move on to our next destination.. I was wearing a sneakers and jogging pants that day since I thought we're going to trek and trek and trek. I was surprised when Enzo said "Ma'am paki-tanggal na yung shoes mo. May tsinelas ka ba? Mababasa kasi tayo mamaya e." So I thought Mangrove Kayaking na kami... I was wrong..

Peminta Falls

After less than 10 minutes kuya driver stopped. By the way, snacks, bottled water and insect repellant are necessities.

Enzo passed through first. Bwahahha!

Peminta Falls (high pitch) ♫
Ang liit. hahah! Sabi ko kay kuya "Yan na yun?! Bat ang liit niya ata? hahah!" He replied "Oo ma'am. Playground namin yan nung bata pa ko. Wag mo yang ismolin, lagpas tao yan pag bumaba ka." Na-offend ko ata siya. Stupid mouth. The falls had some trace that it was indeed an attraction before. We saw a few benches that are close to deterioration and the ladders that used to be a way for those who wants to go down and swim are slowly detaching from its support. Sayang kasi I'm sure there are a lot of memories for locals like Enzo in this place. Seeing your playground being worn out is not a good scene to look at.

We sat at one of the benches there to rest for a while. Just want to share one of our makulit na conversations.

Enzo: "Mag-isa ka lang talaga ma'am? Ang tapang mo naman."
Me: "Ay hindi kuya.. Ang dami ko nga e o! Hindi mo ba sila nakikita?"
Enzo: (Laughed) "Ay naku ma'am. Umamin ka! Major mo ang Philosophy nung nag-aaral ka no? hahaha!"

Enzo: "Ilan taon ka na ba?"
Me: "Hmmm.. sige nga hulaan mo?"

He was just looking at me.. wearing a devil smile. Pang-asar! hahah!

Me: "25 lang ako no. Ano ba akala mo?"
Enzo: "Talaga ma'am? Hindi po halata."
Me: "Bakit? Ano ba sa tingin mo? 28?!?!"
Enzo: "Hindi..... 30! wahahaha!"

Sasaktan ko na sana e. hahah! Sabay bawi..

He desperately needs one. lol! I just got a text from him right after I left Coron. "Ma'am wag mo masyadong ikalat ha... Baka sumikat ako e. Konti lang ha.. Tapos dapat mabait tapos medyo suplada. - Enzo (09497415714)" Choosy pa ang lolo mo. Ang kulit talaga. More of our conversations on the succeeding entries.. tatambling kayo kakatawa.

Virgin Forest & Mangrove Kayaking is up next..

If you want to arrange a tour, you may check out http://www.kingfisherpark.com/  to know the activities that suits you (Kayaking, Bird Watching, Trekking, Stary Night). Contact Ms. Menchu by sending her an email at kingfisherbiodiversitypark@yahoo.com or you may text Mr. Ambe at 09173298542 or Borge 09399172133. They belong to Reyes Clan by the way. Mayor of Coron is Mario T. Reyes which is a cousin of Mr. Ambe if I'm not mistaken. Hongyoyomon!

Day 1: 'Me Time' in Coron

Yey I'm alive! hahaha! ang OA lang. Anyway, I just want to tell everyone that I'm glad I pursued my solo trip. It was yet another amazing experience for me. I actually want to pack my things now and go back. I already miss Coron and the people I met there. (I love you guys! I never felt it was a solo trip at all..)

Why solo? Well, aside from being inspired by my travel blogger friends, there's this one major reason behind it. Before kasi, whenever I stumbled upon new places on the net, I always ask my friends to go with me.

If you're going to ask why I chose Coron, well since first time ko to travel alone, I might as well do it in the safest place I know. Zero Crime rate sa kanila by the way. Ang galeng diba? Also, I'm already familiar with most of the spots there kaya wag na masyadong mamangha sa katapangan ko kuno. hahaha! October last year I was there together with my mom and cousins. I instantly fell in love talaga kaya sabi ko I shall return together with my special someone. Unfortunately, I don't have one yet pero kating kati na kong bumalik. So hindi ko na talaga siya naantay. Char! hahah!

Ang dami agad sinabi e no. hahah! (Konting tiis na lang) Aug 25, I got a call from Airphil informing me that my flight for Aug 27 was cancelled due to operational chorva. Hindi ko na naintindihan basta they moved it to Aug 28 at 2:20pm. Nainis pa ko kasi last day ng Kasadyaan Festival yung Aug 28 tapos 4pm and ETA dun. So Aug 28 came...

Patiently waiting at the airport after they announced an hour delay (again!)
Andrew E was on board! (and you're not interested at all. hahaha!)

The plane ride was not fine at all. Muntik ko ng magamit ang airsickness bag. Define turbulence talaga. Touchdown at 4pm in Busuangga Airport. I asked Kuya JJ (09284083105), van driver, to pick me up and I saw him outside waiting for me. Salamat sa pagaantay kuya. (I've known him since our first visit). No other public transportation available so might as well contact kuya JJ to pick you up. He'll charge you 150.00 each hanggang sa hotel mo kahit san pa yan.

We passed by the King Ranch once again... don't be surprised if you see a lot of cows pooping on the road. Wala silang shokot sa sasakyan! hahah!
After 30 minutes, we were in Coron Town proper already.

See? Fiesta mode talaga that day! (see that Sea Dive sign at the right? pumasok lang diyan and makikita mo ang cheapest lodging house)
I chose to stay at Sea Breeze since I heard dati pa na ito yung pinaka-mura. P 350.00/night for a fan room with common bathroom.

Not bad isn't it?
I was at the top floor with windows on 2 sides so it's more than enough for me. Good thing the weather is fine that day. I was texting Kuya Jason (my boatman friend whom I met din last year) that morning and sabi niya hindi maganda ang panahon sa kanila. So I sent a message "Nasan ang ulan ha?! Pinagloloko moko ata ako kuya e. hahah!" Unfortunately, walang reply. Dinedma ako. hahah! Kainis. Anyway, hinanap ko siya sa plaza coz that was the last text I got from him.

I tried my luck there pero negative. I don't know where he lives exactly kasi kaya para kong naghahanap ng tao sa butas ng karayom.

Crowd waiting for the marching band showdown

one of my favorite street food.. Scramble!
No luck for me that day. I tried calling him kaya lang cannot be reached. :( I just ate my cup noodle for dinner and then slept. Kalimutan na ang lechon sa pyesta. I had to prepare for my Kingfisher Park Tour the next day. As what I've mentioned on my previous post, I was the only anticipated guest for that huge park. It was a bit intriguing since it was rarely featured on any Coron blog entries so I'd like to know more about it. My impression on the word "PARK" changed after that day. hahah! This is one of the highlights of my trip so please watch out for that. To give you a sneak preview, take a look at these photos:

At pinagod ako ng PARK na yan. hahah! I was indeed the only guest. Haciendera mode talaga. Stay tuned. hihihihi!
